SingletrAction ‘Dig For Pig’ – The whole story.

One lucky rider reaps the rewards for his hard work.

SingletrAction member Nick Burgin is smiling as he rides his new bike. He knows that the frame he is riding is thanks to his hard work volunteering a few hours of his time once a month to help build and maintain trails across Yorkshire under the wing of Yorkshires volunteer trailbuilding group, SingletrAction.

The all new Ragley ‘Piglet’ frame was kindly donated by Brant Richards at Ragley bikes as part of SingletrActions 2010/2011 ‘Dig For Pig’ incentive to encourage budding trailbuilders to come along and see just what is involved when it comes to creating and maintaining the trails you love to ride. Members of SingletrAction were presented with a raffle ticket for every ‘dig’ they attended. The more work you put in, the better your chances of winning.

In total there were 232 tickets included in the draw. To put that into perspective…..

31 trailbuilding days were run in all weathers although 5 planned days were cancelled due to severe weather and snow.

Works were under taken at Stainburn, Dalby, Thackley and Guisborough, and trailbuilding resumed with a new team of enthusiastic builders.

It was estimated that 1350 volunteer man hours went into the trails over the 12 month period, not including a huge amount of time and effort put in behind the scenes with the website, membership, finances, ordering tools and materials, drawing up plans, discussions with FE, meetings, doing promotion work, negotiating new sponsors and discounts for members, consulting on other projects outside of SingletrAction plus a host of other bits.

Pictured is Nick receiving a congratulating handshake from Brant who stopped by at a recent Stainburn trailbuilding day to check out the trails and see what all the fuss is about. All that new school Calderdale riding seems to have put Brant in a good position as he breezed his way around Stainburns infamous black graded Warren Boulder Trail.
Notice Nick leaning on his shovel in true trailbuilder style. It’s not all about the hard work. Trailbuilding is a truely different way to socialise, talk bikes and generally let all your trials and tribulations wither away on a Sunday morning.
